In December 1897, the Florida State Seminary West of the Suwannee River established its first debate team. One hundred and twenty years later, we are launching our first website. Many things have changed in the interim, but some things have not: our winning tradition, our focus on critical thinking, reasoning, and research skills, and, especially, the passing on of the gift of debate from generation to generation of Florida State debaters.
To ensure that we can continue passing on this gift to future generations, Dr. Marilyn J. Young, the Wayne C. Minnick Chair of Communication and Professor Emerita at Florida State University, established a campaign to endow the debate program. At her behest and in her honor, we have also created a virtual gathering place for the alumni and friends of the Florida State University Debate team by establishing interconnected social media platforms, and now, launching our Florida State Debate website at https://youngdebate.org.
Take a moment to reconnect with all the friends, colleagues, and mentors from your college debate team. EXPLORE the rich history of Florida State Debate using our Interactive Historical Timeline. Your years on the team are most likely represented in our large collection of photos, articles, and trophies in our Digital Trophy Case. You will also enjoy watching our History Bits, short videos sharing our stories. LEARN more about what your fellow alumni are doing now. CONNECT with us for more information, news, event invitations (like our upcoming 2019 Reunion) and our new blog newsletter Debate Matters. After all, at Florida State Debate, #AlumniMatter. We value you, the people who ARE #FloridaStateDebate.
Be sure to look for future posts highlighting the contents of the website and sharing more about our alums, and the value of the gift of debate. If you have any photos, materials or suggestions you would like to share, contact us!
